Liminal spaces are an aesthetic current that comes from the digital world. They depict places—or non-places—that feel familiar yet undefined, suspended in an indeterminate time. Time seems to dissolve in transitional spaces such as corridors with no clear destination, or houses placed within almost unreal landscapes.
Through unnatural colour palettes and subtle shifts in framing, Falk Töpfer creates unsettling architectures and landscapes. However, these spaces are not strictly planned; they arise more from intuition than intention. Changes in perspective and the playful use of colour gradually give shape to these non-places, where presence and absence are held in tension within the atmosphere of the work.
What feels out of place can be unsettling, but not necessarily negative. On the contrary, disruption can also open a space for a kind of magic. As Mark Fisher suggested, the feeling that something does not belong often signals that we are encountering something new. In that strangeness, a particular fascination—and a quiet form of beauty—emerges.
